Just what is Home Theater, really? One definition is "any attempt to simulate a movie theater environment for movie viewing." This is true to some extent. Wide screen high definition television with digital sound is a lot closer to the "movie experience" than trying to watch a 27" TV from around the corner while cleaning up the garage on a Saturday afternoon.

But then again, there are home theaters and there are home theaters. There's a basic difference between having a fully designed and integrated home theater in a dedicated space, and a wide screen TV with a "home theater in a box" in your living room or family room. The latter is great if you're planning on watching television with the family while the kids are playing, or if you read the newspaper during CSI, or if you're "sort of" interested in March Madness. If you want to, plan on, or routinely do other things while watching television, then you may not really want a home theater that is truly like having a theater in your home.

So, if we consider that watching television or movies in a multipurpose room isn't really a home theater, we can create a stricter working definition: a Home Theater is an attempt to provide a real Theater-Like Experience in a home setting. This implies theater style seating, a darkened environment so that the full range of visual brightness and contrast can be employed, and a sound-isolated environment that supports the full dynamic range of the sound track without resorting to dynamic compression. Without all these elements, the Home Theater is incomplete. All are needed for the viewer/listener to be fully enveloped in the theater experience.
